Neonatal conjunctivitis found in newborn babies can cause blindness when left untreated. Up to 10% of all pregnant women in the United States have a sexually transmitted chlamydial infection. If these infections are untreated in mothers, the possibility that a newborn infant will develop a related eye infection ranges from 10% to 20%.*
