Conjunctivitis: Conjunctiva
built 657 days ago
[One] type of chronic conjunctivitis is meibomitis. It is a chronic conjunctivitis caused by inflammation of the meibomian oil glands that line the posterior lid margin behind the eyelashes. These glands malfunction when inflamed, leading to chronic inflammation of the lid margins and the conjunctiva, as well as dry eyes. Meibomitis and blepharitis (inflammation of an eyelid) are ... often associated with the skin disorder, acne rosacea.
The term "conjunctivitis" encompasses a broad group of conditions presenting as inflammation of the conjunctiva. The inflammation can be hyperacute, acute or chronic in presentation and infectious or noninfectious in origin. Conjunctivitis is the most common cause of red eye.

Inclusion conjunctivitis in the newborn results from passage through an infected birth canal and develops 5-14 days after birth. Both eyelids and conjunctivae are swollen. There may be a discharge of pus from the eyes.

Chemical conjunctivitis causes redness and inflammation of the conjunctiva. It is caused by an irritant or an actual splash of a chemical into the eye, such as chlorine. The eye may produce clear mucus in response to the chemical agent. This type of conjunctivitis usually clears up on its own within about a day.
When the conjunctiva becomes inflamed, this is called conjunctivitis. Conjunctivitis can have many causes, such as bacteria, viruses, chemicals, allergies, and more. In many cases it is difficult to determine the primary cause for the inflammation. One of the most common is bacterial.
Tests can be helpful when the diagnosis is uncertain, as may be the case with chronic conjunctivitis. One test involves scraping the conjunctival tissue and staining the tissue sample for eosinophils. Eosinophils are a class of white blood cells that are almost always present in tissue affected by an allergic reaction.
