Untreated inclusion conjunctivitis in the newborn persists for 3-12 months and usually heals; ... there may be scarring or neovascularization. In the adult, if left untreated, the disease may continue for months and cause corneal neovascularization. Even if treated, antibiotics usually do not reverse damage that may have occurred, but they may help prevent it if given early enough.

Antibiotic medication, usually eye drops, is effective for bacterial conjunctivitis. Viral conjunctivitis will disappear on its own. The discomfort of viral or bacterial conjunctivitis can be soothed by applying warm compresses (a clean cloth soaked in warm water) to closed eyes.

Over 30 percent of patients with gonococcal conjunctivitis have concurrent chlamydial venereal disease. For this reason, it is advisable to treat patients with supplemental oral antibiotics that are effective against Chlamydia species.7
