Fay began the journey in the Nouabale-Ndoki National Park in Congo, which WCS helped create in 1993. His research team will eventually travel southwest to the Atlantic Ocean, recording what they see along the way. So far he has encountered everything from pristine wilderness, where chimpanzees stare rather than flee, to active poachers’ camps which is , unfortunately, part of a new wave of human migration into the forest.

Since 2004, around 29,000 children have been demobilized and separated from armed groups in Congo, according to the United Nations. However, Ironside said this is the first time this year that a militia group has voluntarily handed over children from its ranks.

This led to a military intervention into Congo by Belgium in an ostensible effort to secure the safety of its citizens. Whilst the danger to Belgian citizens was real, the reentry of these forces was a violation of the national sovereignty of the new nation, as it had not requested Belgian assistance.
