The humanitarian crisis in Congo remains the worlds deadliest: More than 31,000 people die every month as a result of the conflict. Eighteen months after the signing of a formal peace agreement, people in DR Congo continue to die at a rate that is one third higher than the average rate for sub-Saharan Africa. The national crude mortality rate (CMR) of 2.0 deaths per 1,000 per month is 67% higher than that reported for DR Congo
The war in DR Congo is by far the world’s deadliest conflict since World War II. The International Rescue Committee’s latest mortality survey in 2004 demonstrated that 3.9 million people had died because of the conflict. To date 39,000 continued to die every month, with nearly half of these deaths being children under the age of five.
The 1998-2002 war in Congo drew in the armies of five other African nations. Neighbouring Rwanda and Uganda and allied Congolese rebel groups held control of the east and north-east. The government held the west.

In May 1997 Kabila came to power in the former Zaire (which he renamed the Democratic Republic of Congo), ousting dictator Mobutu. The US diplomacy was euphoric. They now had a string of "client" regimes which included Ethiopia, Eritrea, Uganda, Rwanda, the DR of Congo and ... a great deal of South Africa's foreign policy in the region was dictated by Washington. But many things have happened since. At least nine African countries have become involved in the Congo conflict which broke out on August 2. What is the meaning of the conflict in the DR of Congo?
