The Congo is a country in central Africa. David Livingstone was the first European explorer to enter the region. His reports resulted in King Leopold II of Belgium establishing the Congo Free State. Except for the sending of Christian missionaries to the area, little was done to prepare the country for independence.

Elections in Congo The population of the Congo comprises approximately 200 ethnic groups, the great majority of whom speak one of the Bantu languages. In addition, there are Nilotic speakers in the north near Sudan and scattered groups of Pygmies (especially in the Ituri Forest in the northeast). The principal Bantu-speaking ethnic groups are the Kongo, Mongo, Luba, Bwaka, Kwango, Lulua, Lunda, and Kasai. The Alur are the main Nilotic speakers. In the 1990s, Congo ... had an influx of immigrants, particularly refugees from neighboring countries. In 1985 over half the population was rural, but the country is becoming increasingly urbanized.
Congo is governed under the constitution of 2002. The president, who is both head of state and head of government, is popularly elected for a seven-year term and is eligible for a second term. The bicameral legislature consists of the 66-seat Senate and the 137-seat National Assembly. All legislators are popularly elected to five-year terms. Administratively, the country is divided into ten regions and the Brazzaville federal district.

The majority of Congo's mining deals were negotiated during the six-year war or the subsequent three-year transition, which saw rebel groups and government loyalists govern the country in the run-up to elections. Many of those contracts have come under heavy criticism at home and abroad for irregularities.
