Concrete is a unique material. It is hard, dense and durable yet it is highly susceptible to staining when it has a rough to semi-smooth finish. Most exterior concrete surfaces like driveways, sidewalks and driveway aprons need to have a somewhat rough surface for traction. Water, oil and other liquids can readily soak into concrete if it is not protected. Protect your surface with a clear sealer or liquid repellent.
Did you know that 140 million tons of concrete are recycled each year in the United States alone? Concrete recycling is becoming an increasingly popular way to utilize aggregate left behind when structures or roadways are demolished. In the past, this rubble was disposed of in landfills, but with more attention being paid to environmental concerns, concrete recycling allows reuse of the rubble while ... keeping construction costs down.
Concrete has recently opened for Cinderella, Pat Travers and Brian Howe of Bad Company. Concrete has backed up George Lynch for a guitar clinic and George was impressed. Outdoor events such as Steamboat Days in Burlington, IA, Railroad Days in Galesburg, IL, the Knox County Fair and ABATE events add to Concrete's experience to ensure you have a successful event.
Concrete installation in cold weather can be successful if your contractor follows a few guidelines. Do no pour concrete on frozen ground. Mix concrete with hot water, preheated sand and gravel and add extra cement. Use a liquid curing compound and insulated blankets.
Concrete is poured into the wall and deck forms. In just one day, the reinforced concrete is sufficiently cured and forms are removed. Work begins on the second level if a two-story structure. Walls, ceilings, and stairs are poured monolithically.
Concrete does not solidify from drying after mixing and placement; the water reacts with the cement in a chemical process known as hydration. This water is absorbed by cement, which hardens, gluing the other components together and eventually creating a stone-like material. When used in the generic sense, this is the material referred to by the term concrete.
