S & D Coffee -- The Concord, N.C.-based coffee company was instrumental in the launch of Olive Garden's new Caffe la Toscana program. S & D assisted in research and development, and trained more than 25,000 managers and servers on the new coffee in all Olive Garden restaurants. Additionally, S & D helped Olive Garden develop a new thermal coffee pot that improved coffee temperature.
On April 2, 2003, First Data and Concord announced that the two companies had entered into a definitive agreement to merge in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $7 billion. For six months both companies worked cooperatively with the Department of Justice (DOJ) seeking clearance under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act. Notwithstanding these efforts, on October 23, 2003 the DOJ filed a civil antitrust lawsuit to block the proposed merger. Consummation of the merger remains subject to such litigation.
Concord grapes The Concord grape was developed in 1849 by Ephraim Wales Bull in Concord, Massachusetts. Bull planted seeds from wild Vitis labrusca and evaluated over 20,000 seedlings before finding what he considered the perfect grape, the original vine of which still grows at his former home. The pollen parent is unknown, but although 'Concord' is frequently considered to be basically a Vitis labrusca cultivar, some have argued that the hermaphrodite flowers suggest at least a small amount of Vitis vinifera in its pedigree. This trait has not been proven to exist in any native American grapes. However, Concord is definitely much more labrusca-like in its characteristics than vinifera-like. Many consider the likely male parent to have been Catawba, itself probably half Vitis labrusca, which Bull had growing nearby.
The twenty-seventh annual Bank of America Championship takes place June 18-24 at Nashawtuc Country Club in Concord. This is a comeback year for the tournament, which last year became only the third tournament in PGA TOUR history to be cancelled because of inclement weather. Despite the cancellation and through the efforts of Bank of America, the Champions Tour and many other partners, the Bank of America Championship still donated $418,000 to local charities. The tournament is the oldest 54-hole event on the Champions Tour and has been held at Nashawtuc Country Club since 1984. Over the past 26 years, the tournament has donated more than $4.5 million to local charities.
