When Concerta was developed, they used a fascinating technology called OROS. OROS refers to: osmotic-controlled release oral delivery system. What OROS does, is use the water in the gut to cause the medicine to be absorbed gradually, through osmosis. Suffice it to say that this new pill takes a medicine that has to be taken 3 times daily, and makes it once per day. You can see a short video of how this works here.

Do not use Concerta if you have used an MAO inhibitor such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), tranylcypromine (Parnate), phenelzine (Nardil), rasagiline (Azilect), or selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam) within the past 14 days. Serious, life-threatening side effects can occur if you use Concerta before the MAO inhibitor has cleared from your body. Do not use Concerta if you are allergic to methylphenidate or if you have glaucoma, tics (muscle twitches) or Tourette's syndrome, depression, or severe anxiety, tension, or agitation (Concerta can make these symptoms worse). Concerta may be habit-forming and should be used only by the person it was prescribed for. Keep track of how many pills have been used from each new bottle you receive. Concerta is a drug of abuse and you should be aware if any person in the household is using this medicine improperly or without a prescription.

Concerta, a derivative of Ritalin, was approved in 2000 by the Food and Drug Administration as a treatment for ADD (attention deficit disorder) and ADHD (attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder). Like Ritalin, Concerta contains methylphenidate, a stimulant. However, unlike Ritalin, Concerta is a time-release tablet with an outer coat of medication that dissolves quickly. Inside are smaller medication compartments that dissolve over the next 12 hours. The advantage of this, to some, is that children only need to receive one dose during the day. However, a major disadvantage to this drug is that the dosage cannot be decreased nor the tablet chewed, both of which could result in an accidental overdose.
