Schrader estimates that there has been a 75 to 100 percent increase in the number of new computer viruses that Trend Micro has encountered since the beginning of December. He ... said there has been a 100 percent increase in traffic to the company's Web site and in support calls.

A[L]though they are not strictly-speaking viruses, Spyware (... known as Adware) programs have a similar effect - they take over some aspect of your computer. Usually transmitted via a website you've visited these can be every bit as nasty causing annoying pop-ups to remotely dialing premium rate numbers (the shock comes with your next telephone bill!).
