Computer Hacking: Information
built 236 days ago
Computer hacking that is done for the purpose of committing financial fraud is a white collar crime that is taken very seriously in the United States. Federal law defines computer hacking as intentionally accessing a computer without authorization or exceeding authorization in order to access restricted information. Restricted information can include a myriad of things including: financial records of an individual or institution, personal information about an individual or organization, any government information or intelligence communication, and the like.
Computer hacking is the breaking into a computer system, usually without permission. This tactic is sometimes employed by identity thieves to steal personal information such as social security numbers, account numbers, and more--to further their pursuits of stealing identities.
Two fresh graduates from a prominent institution face hacking charges that they allegedly performed on the computer system of the Waco school district. The accusation on Sean Edward Erickson, 17 and Samuel Porter Smith, 18 is that the graduates from A.J. Moore Academy breached the security of a computer system and accessed confidential information like addresses and Social Security numbers.Officials of WISD (WACO Independent School District) said the district's technology division found the breach on May 11, 2007.

Government investigators hacked into the Internal Revenue Service computer system last year and gained access to Social Security numbers and other sensitive information from electronically filed tax returns, a congressional report said. "We had the ability to access virtually everything that was included in an electronically filed return," said the report's author, Bob Dacey, director of information security issues for the General Accounting Office. The IRS is not the only agency grappling with computer security problems, Dacey said. "We have found similar types of problems in a number of agencies," he said. A GAO report released in September said a fourth of the government's major agencies had computer security problems.

A computer hacking module his been included in the CHERUB basic training program since the late 1980s. All agents are taught hacking skills, enabling them to bypass simple passwords and find hidden or deleted data. More secure data, such as encrypted data, can usually be copied onto a portable hard disc drive or memory key and passed on to MI5, where specialists have a strong record of decoding even the most strongly encrypted information.
A computer hacker has upset a police investigation into last month's riot near the campus of Michigan State University. The hacker broke into the East Lansing police computer through a Web site and apparently stole confidential information from nearly 200 tipsters. The tipsters were trying to help police catch rioters who smashed windows and burned a police car after MSU's basketball team lost in the NCAA tournament.
