Computer-Generated Imagery: Computer Generated Imagery

Many prefer the term "CG" for "computer graphics" instead of "CGI" for "computer generated imagery." "CGI" is ... known to stand for the "Common Gateway Interface" and is associated with script programming languages, such as perl. "CGI" was associated thusly long before it started to be associated with computer graphics, in the 1990's
The MA Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) allows for the exploration of a design ethos through static and time-based digital media, 2D and 3D technologies within real and virtual based environments. The investigation of motion graphics, digital effects and interactive theories allows you to explore the possibilities of your work for a broad range of creative industries including multimedia, motion graphics, digital games and special effects.

Since it's inception, one of the major goals of computer graphics has been the quest for photorealism in the synthesis of computer generated imagery. In pursuit of this goal, the field has relied on a photographic metaphor whereby the transport of light is traced from a scene, through a camera and onto an image plane. In the final stage of the synthesis process, the tone reproduction stage, simulated illuminance values are converted to appropriate pixel values for eventual display.

There are two main paradigms in computer generated imagery. The simplest is 2D computer graphics which reflect how you might draw using a pencil and a piece of paper. In this case... the image is on the computer screen and the instrument you draw with might be a tablet stylus or a mouse. What is generated on your screen will appear to be drawn with a pencil, pen or paintbrush.
Now, thanks to the motion picture and advertising industries, computer generated imagery (CGI) is usually used to augment reality (as in adding dinosaurs) or to extol the advantages of a particular product. Any artistic merit in these happens as a comprimise between the pragmatic needs of the production, as enforced by the producers, and the artistic visions of the animators and production crew, as visualized by the art directors.
