The Department of Computer Science then has a two-fold mission. First, to provide appropriate non-major courses to meet the needs of all students, and second, to offer a major and minor for those students who want to pursue a career in this discipline. The objective of the undergraduate major/minor curriculum in computer science is to develop professionally competent and broadly educated computer scientists who wish to pursue professional careers or graduate studies.

Computer science left the other sciences near the end of the 20th century and made its own ways of doing things and its own group of word uses. It has to do with electrical engineering, mathematics, and language science.
The core courses include: -- The Art and Science of Measurement -- This course focuses on the methodologies and techniques that are needed to measure and monitor computer performance. It is taught by Mark Friedman, an architect working in the developer division at Microsoft, who has developed measurement techniques and software that are commercially available today. -- Statistics for Performance Analysis & Capacity Planning -- This course presents essential statistical analysis techniques that can be used to derive knowledge from the measured/monitored performance information. It is taught by Ray Wicks who has spent most of his career at IBM in the performance analysis and capacity planning end of the business in Poughkeepsie and at the Washington Systems Center. He is the major contributor to IBM's internal PA & CP tool zCP3000. -- Modeling and Forecasting -- This course leverages the measurement and analysis techniques to performance "what if" analysis using computer performance modeling and forecasting algorithms and techniques.
Most systems programmers hold a four-year degree in computer science. Extensive knowledge of a variety of operating systems is essential for such workers. This includes being able to configure an operating system to work with different types of hardware and being able to adapt the operating system to best meet the needs of a particular organization. Systems programmers ... must be able to work with database systems, such as DB2, Oracle, or Sybase.

The CS Department offers a broad and flexible curriculum that emphasizes core Computer Science technologies and their applications. Students may earn either the Bachelor of Science (BS) or the Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Computer Science. Both degrees provide in-depth preparation for professional work in business, industry, or government.
