In addition to overseeing the works on stage, Lewis emceed every show. As the West Bank grew, so did Lewis’ skill as a stand-up and eventually, the fulfillment of performing stand-up outweighed that of working in the theater. Having found his public voice, Lewis left the West Bank in the late 80’s to pursue stand-up full time.

  5. Fo -- Dario Fo
    Dario Fo, recipient of the 1997 Nobel Prize for Literature, was born Leggiuno Sangiano in San Giano, Italy. His father, Felice, was a railroad worker and part-time actor, and his mother, Pina Rota, came from a peasant family. As a young man he helped his father smuggle escaped Allied soldiers and Jewish scientists to Switzerland during World War II. Fo was educated at the Brera Art Academy and studied architecture at the Polytechnic. In 1953 he married actress Franca Rame. Together they founded several theatre companies, and she collaborated on many of his plays.
  6. Burlesque Theater
    The popular burlesque show of the 1870s through the 1920s referred to a raucous, somewhat bawdy style of variety theater. It was inspired by Lydia Thompson and her troupe, the British Blondes, who first appeared in the United States in the 1860s, and ... by early "leg" shows such as The Black Crook (1866). Its form, humor, and aesthetic traditions were largely derived from the minstrel show. One of the first burlesque troupes was the Rentz-Santley Novelty and Burlesque Company, created in 1870 by M.B. Leavitt, who had earlier feminized the minstrel show with her group Madame Rentz's Female Minstrels.
