September 7, 2005 - Gamers who enjoyed playing Commandos 3’s predecessors will have a blast playing this recent addition to the series. Filled with action packed gameplay, Commandos 3 is divided into three campaigns. These campaigns range in locales from the Normandy Beaches on D-day, to the Gestapo headquarters in Berlin Germany. If you’ve played any of the preceding games you’ll be quite familiar with the games premise, using a small squad of elite commandos, and using their skills to accomplish your mission. The game has one difficulty level, extremely difficult, and most casual gamers will be turned off by the difficulty within the first couple of hours. But through the use of tactical and strategic ingenuity, and lots of saving, the game is worthwhile and an absorbing experience that you won’t soon forget.

The original games in the Commandos series have always focused on precision, tactics and puzzle complex scenarios. This has made for a high challenge rating and enjoyment factor. The first person shooter format is much more forgiving than its counter parts, but ... much more limited in scope and execution.

From a visual standpoint and in terms of the musical soundtrack, Commandos 3 comes off as a lot more professional, engaging and atmospheric than any of its predecessors. The new particle effects system works marvelously; weather effects and the explosions look spectacular, and the isometric 2D backgrounds are just as detailed and well designed as they were in the previous games. Voice acting is colorful, with lots of fun accents and it successfully conveys the emotions of the characters. The same can be said about the epic and nicely paced soundtrack. While the game has retained the 2D look of the outdoor environments (coupled with full 3D characters) the indoor environments have went through a bit of a makeover. They are now modeled in full 3D, just like the characters, which gives you a chance to rotate the camera better and get a superior overview of the interior.
