Comix Zone: Super Sketch
built 286 days ago
In Comix Zone, your character Sketch is stuck in a comic book and he has to kick box his way out of it and stop one of his evil characters from taking over the world. You may find that on the surface just like any other action arcade game save you are stuck in a comic book. Well you are wrong! Comix Zone is not just like any other action because has some interesting gameplay and a twist to the action. For one your main character has quite a few good moves and for another can choose his path through the comic book.

In Comix Zone you control Sketch through three Episodes, each consisting of two levels. A variety of moves can be used to fight against the thugs that Mortus draws to fight you right before your eyes. These include the serial high tornado kick, the uppercut, the floor sweep, the whirlwind jump kick, and more. You are ... able to pick up special items like knives, grenades, bombs, superhero icons, and even your pet sewer rat, Roadkill, who is always willing to help his master.

As part of Sketch's travel into Comix Zone, he takes the hero's role in the story, giving him access to typical superhero fighting skills far beyond his regular abilities. If he attacks an immobile object, Sketch's health will diminish slightly, meaning that if he is low on health other tools such as explosives should be used to continue instead. One power-up - a collectible fist - temporarily transforms Sketch into Super Sketch, who shreds the page and destroys all enemies and obstacles in his path.

Comix Zone tells the story of Sketch Turner, a "starving artist" comic book writer/rock musician trying to get by. As fun as such an occupation may sound, Sketch's life is about to get much more interesting. It seems that Sketch's most vile criminal creation, Mortus, has managed to leave his home in the fictional Newer York City and exchange places in the real world with Sketch himself. Now Sketch must fight for his life against his own creations, each illustrated by Mortus as Sketch moves from comic frame to comic frame.

Released in January 1995, Comix Zone follows Sketch Turner as he brawls his way through the pages and panels of his own comic book creation to defeat the villain Mortus, a character of the same comic, who has come to life. and save the damsel Alissa Cyan, if the case may be.

Fans of the Commodore 64 classic Dan Dare (based on the British comic hero) will immediatley recognize Comix Zone as being a true spiritual descendant, and a great one at that. The only downsides I can think of are: a) the game is a tad too short, and b) it lacks any save feature of any kind-- a curious absence inherited from the console version that should have been fixed. Still, Comix Zone is well worth the time for fans of superheroes comics, and platform fans in general. Despite its shorter-than-average length, the game offers multiple paths (via different panels you can go to) so that the replay value is somewhat high. With innovative concepts, smooth controls, and vibrant graphics, Comix Zone is a must-have.
