1. Columbus Day -- Christopher Columbus
   Columbus Day is a holiday celebrating the anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas, which happened on the October 12, 1492 in the Julian calendar, or October 21, 1492 in the modern Gregorian calendar. Similar holidays, celebrated as Día de la Raza (Day of the Race) in many countries in Latin America, Día de las Culturas (Day of the Cultures) in Costa Rica, Discovery Day in The Bahamas, Día de la Hispanidad in Spain, Discoverer's Day in Hawaii, and the newly renamed (as of 2002) Día de la Resistencia Indígena (Day of Indigenous Resistance) in Venezuela, commemorate the same event.
2. Christopher Columbus
   Christopher Columbus is an Anglicized version of his name. He was born Cristoforo Colombo in September 1451 in Genoa, Italy. Young Chris was the oldest son of Domenico Colombo, a wool-worker and small-scale merchant, and Domenico's wife, Susanna Fontanarossa. He ... had two younger brothers, Bartholomew and Diego. Essentially, he grew up in Italy during the early Renaissance in a low-middle class family.
3. Columbus Day
   Columbus Day is the annual U.S. commemoration of Christopher Columbus's landing in the New World (at San Salvador island... known as Waitling Island, today part of the British Bahamas) on October 12, 1492. Columbus was not the first European successfully to cross the Atlantic. Viking sailors are believed to have established a short-lived settlement in Newfoundland sometime in the 11th Century, and scholars have argued for a number of other possible pre-Columbian landings. Columbus, however, initiated the lasting encounter between Europeans and the indigenous peoples of the Western Hemisphere.
4. Columbus Ohio
   Columbus City Schools (CCS), formerly Columbus Public Schools, is the second largest district in Ohio, with 62,000 pupils.[55] CCS operates 142 elementary, middle, and high schools, including a number of alternative schools. The suburbs operate their own districts as well, typically serving students in one or more townships, with districts sometimes crossing municipal boundaries. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Columbus ... operates numerous parochial elementary and high schools. The second largest school district in the area is South-Western City Schools, which encompasses southwestern Franklin County. There are three large secular private schools in the area.
5. Chris Columbus
   Chris Columbus (... known as Joe Morris) was a drummer and bandleader, and father of drummer Sonny Payne. He led a band from the 1930s, including a period at the Savoy Ballroom. He was a regular drummer with Louis Jordan from 1946-52, and is seen with the saxophonist in the films Reet, Petite and Gone (1947) and Look Out, Sister (1948).
6. Columbus Clippers
   (Columbus) Cooper Stadium, long-time Franklinton home of Baseball’s Triple-A Columbus Clippers, is on-deck to become a part of the City of Columbus after 75 years in Franklin Township. Mayor Michael B. Coleman is forwarding Ordinance #1665-2007 to City Council for first reading on Monday to annex the property, which is owned by Franklin County.
7. Columbus Dispatch
   The Columbus Dispatch is a daily newspaper, based in Columbus, Ohio, that serves the central portion of the state. Its first issue was published on July 1, 1871. It has been the only mainstream daily newspaper in the city since The Columbus Citizen-Journal stopped printing in 1985.
8. Chris Columbus -- Director Chris Columbus
   Chris Columbus has the midas touch when it comes to choosing his films. Since the 1980s, he has been one of the young directors to beat in genre-happy Hollywood, working with the likes of maestro Steven Spielberg and directing his own movies with an agile flair for comedy and wit. Part adventure, part family fun, and almost always magical for kids, Columbus’s films have consistently filled a niche for feel-good moviemaking that everybody wants or needs at various point in their film-watching careers.
9. Christopher Columbus -- King Ferdinand
   The next event that influenced greatly the life of Christopher Columbus was the fall of Granada in 1491-92. For Christian Spain, the conquest of Granada was the most important event in the 15th century. After nearly eight centuries of fighting, the Christian Iberians finally defeated the Muslim Iberians. On the 2nd of January, 1492, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella rode into Granada as conquerors. At their side sat a disconsolate Columbus. While others who had accompanied the Catholic monarchs were rejoicing as they watched the symbols of sovereignty pass to the Christians, Columbus sat dejected.
10. Columbus Clippers -- Cooper Stadium
    Columbus is ... home to many professional sports teams, including the Columbus Crew (Major League Soccer), Columbus Clippers (minor league baseball), Columbus Blue Jackets (National Hockey League), and Columbus Destroyers (Arena Football League). Much of the growth in entertainment capacity in Columbus has been recent. The expansion of Ohio Stadium to over 100,000 in capacity, and the construction of the Crew Stadium (America's first soccer-specific stadium), Nationwide Arena, the Schottenstein Center, the Greater Columbus Convention Center, and the PromoWest Pavilion are all projects completed since 1990. Columbus is also home to many annual festivals including the Ohio State Fair, one of the largest fairs in the country; the Columbus Arts Festival and the Jazz and Ribs Festival, both of which occur on the downtown waterfront.
