(Columbus) Cooper Stadium, long-time Franklinton home of Baseball’s Triple-A Columbus Clippers, is on-deck to become a part of the City of Columbus after 75 years in Franklin Township. Mayor Michael B. Coleman is forwarding Ordinance #1665-2007 to City Council for first reading on Monday to annex the property, which is owned by Franklin County.

The Columbus Clippers are the AAA baseball affiliate of the National League Washington Nationals. The Clippers are members of the International League and play at Cooper Stadium in Columbus, Ohio. The team and Cooper Stadium are owned by the government of Franklin County, Ohio.

Seven years after the Columbus Jets left town, the Columbus Clippers began play in the International League in 1977. For the club's first two seasons, they were an affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 1979, they became a farm club of the New York Yankees and remained so for over a quarter century. After the 2006 season, the club became a Washington Nationals affiliate.

Cooper Stadium, the current home of the Columbus Clippers, is owned by Franklin County, which leases the stadium to Franklin County Stadium Inc., a non-profit entity managed by the Parks and Recreation Board. Plans to move the Clippers to a new downtown stadium were announced by the Franklin County Commissioners in 2005.

In the first three years of the Yankees-Clippers marriage (1979-81), Columbus won the Governors Cup, becoming the first team in International League history to capture three straight titles. Interestingly, each of those teams was managed by a different person Gene Michael in 1979, Joe Altobelli in 1980 and Frank Verdi in 1981.
