Colossal Cave Adventure (... known as ADVENT, Colossal Cave, or Adventure) (Crowther, 1976; Crowther & Woods, 1977) was the first computer adventure game. It was originally designed by Will Crowther, a programmer and keen caver, who based the layout on part of the Mammoth Cave system in Kentucky.[1] The Colossal Cave subnetwork has many entrances, one of which is known as Bedquilt. Crowther reproduced portions of the real cave so faithfully that cavers who have played the game can easily navigate through familiar sections in the Bedquilt region on their first visit.[2]

Believed lost, the orginal FORTRAN source code of Colossal Cave Adventure, written by Will Crowthers, was recovered from a backup of Don Woods's student account at Stanford. This was the first interactive text adventure. It explored the real Colossal Cave in Kentucky. It was written during academic year 1975-1976. Woods expanded the game to include invented locations in May 1977, and this version was widely distributed. FORTRAN on the PDP-10, Woods was using SAIL.

Colossal Cave is located in the desert of Arizona. While there must have been water while it was formed, today this cave is extraordinarily dry. It is called a [D]ry cave by the guides, which is not really a speleologic term. The formations are completely dry and called dead, as they do not grow. As there is no water, there is no limestone deposition and the formations do not grow. It seems some guides allow visitors to touch the formations, with the argument that touching would stop growth, but as there is no growth there is no harm in touching.

The user would ... be a part of an ongoing story in a fantasy setting in this case, an exploration of Colossal Cave in Kentucky. But this Colossal Cave, though remarkably similar to its real-life counterpart, was also very different:

Ina a land far away before many of you were born there was this great colossal cave. Long before cyberspace and around the time of DARPANET stood a cabin by a stream. In this cabin lay many items of interest.
