Since the mid-20th century, Colombia has been torn by violence. Struggles between left-wing guerrillas, right-wing paramilitary groups, and the Colombian armed forces have convulsed much of the countryside. Colombia has ... been plagued by an illegal drug trade that flourished in the country as a consequence of the growing demand for narcotics, particularly cocaine, in the United States and other rich, industrialized countries. The Colombian government has attempted to limit drug production and negotiate a peaceful settlement with the rebel forces. At the beginning of the 21st century, however, Colombia still experienced upheaval, and violence had become a daily experience for many Colombians.

The May 28 election in Colombia was hailed as positive progress for the country’s hard-line direction by most of the world’s major media outlets. Colombia’s President Alvaro Uribe Velez won his second term in what most media reports call a landslide. Indeed, 62 percent was a significant number for the leader who changed Colombia’s constitution to allow a second term for president. Images of cheering voters lining the streets of Bogota were played on television, the internet and in newspapers. “It is almost impossible to get information out about the social injustices in Colombia,” said Perez. For the few brave journalists that try, they are threatened or killed.

This June 2005 paper by R. Ribero and F. Sánchez of University of the Andes analyzes the determinants, effects and costs of domestic violence (DV) against women and children in Colombia. The most relevant factors that explain the occurrence of DV in a household are suffering from DV as a child and living with someone that frequently and excessively consumes alcohol. DV against women increases their probability of unemployment by 6.4 percentage points, lowers their earnings by approximately 40% and worsens their health. DV against children negatively affects their health, school attendance and academic attainment. It is estimated that at least 4.2% of Colombian GDP is lost due to indirect costs of DV.
