The material development of Colombia has necessarily been much retarded by the political disturbances which have occurred since the first quarter of the nineteenth century and have made its history a continuous succession of civil wars. In 1898 Colombia had 8600 miles of telegraph, but the service is very defective. Railroad lines are in operation with an aggregate length of 411 miles, the longest being only 65 miles. The metric system has been in use for weights and measures since 1857. Metallic currency has nearly disappeared, incontrovertible paper forming the circulate medium. The re-establishment of gold coinage has lately been proposed.

Colombia has conducted several health expenditure and financing studies with the purpose of evaluating the impact of the health system reform. Revised and updated estimates for the years 1993-1999 were developed using the Harvard/NHA and SHA approaches, with support from the IDB. In 2000, with the support from PAHO, the country prepared the Health Sector Financial Analysis (HSFA) Report containing estimates of public expenditure/financing, including social insurance.

In the public offering outside of Colombia, 8,411,470 ADSs, representing 33,645,880 preferred shares, were sold at a price of US$ 33.25 per ADS. The underwriters ... exercised the option granted by Bancolombia to purchase up to an additional 1,261,720 ADSs, representing 5,046,880 preferred shares, to cover over-allotments. The net proceeds received by Bancolombia for the sale of ADSs amounted to approximately US$ 314.4 million.
