Colombia: Government
built 630 days ago
Besides this government-to-government manipulation of Colombian sovereignty, Colombia is tempting fruit for multi-national corporations. These, under the guise of development assistance, follow the plundering conquistadors of the past. If only those pesky poor people out in the countryside would stop agitating….
Colombia has a mixed, largely free-market economy, with many jobs in the government and other services, agriculture, and manufacturing. Its main exports are oil (petroleum), coal, chemicals and chemical products, coffee, other food and drink, textiles and clothing, and base metals.

Colombia's economy suffered from weak domestic demand, austere government budgets, and a difficult security situation. The current government faces economic challenges ranging from pension reform to reduction of unemployment. Two of Colombia's leading exports, oil and coffee, face an uncertain future; new exploration is needed to offset declining oil production, while coffee harvests and prices are depressed.

Emigdio Triana, a leader of the Colombian bank workers trade union UNEB, speaks at a public meeting organised by Justice for Colombia, Unite the Union and the TUC. At a public meeting attending by over 75 people in London on Tuesday, Colombian bank workers trade union leader, Emigdio Triana, called on the British Government to change their policy on Colombia. Mr Triana specifically urged the Government to divert resources away from the Colombian military and towards helping the victims of the conflict.
The new Colombian Constitution of 1991 was ratified after being drafted by the Constituent Assembly of Colombia. The constitution included key provisions on political, ethnic, human and gender rights. The new constitution initially prohibited the extradition of Colombian nationals. There were accusations of lobbying by drug cartels in favor of this prohibition. The cartels had previously promoted a violent campaign against extradition, leading to many terrorist attack and mafia style executions. They ... tried to influence the government and political structure of Colombia by means of corruption, as in the case of the 8000 Process scandal.
Political Structure The Republic of Colombia, which gained independence from Spain in 1810, is divided into 32 departments and one capital district. The government is comprised of three branches: the executive, administrative, and judicial branches. The President and Vice President, who are elected by the popular vote for a four-year term, lead the executive branch. The legislature is made up of a 102-member Senate and a 166-member House of Representatives. Finally, The Supreme Court of Justice is the main constituent of the judicial branch. Justices are elected by their peers to serve eight-year terms.
