The Colombia Program is part of the Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) at the Edmund A. Walsh School for Foreign Service at Georgetown University. The Program is country oriented, but has strong thematic interests that are explored from a comparative point of view. These thematic areas are: Local Governance, Intermediate Level of Government, Security Sector Reform, Representative and Participatory Democracy, Local Economic Development, Afro Colombian Issues, and Comparative Analysis.

The pending trade deal would make that status, due to expire at the end of February, permanent and extend equivalent treatment to American goods entering Colombia, which are now subject to tariffs of more than 11%.

Now in its fifth decade, ongoing violent conflict in Colombia has caused the displacement of over two million people. Whilst many people in remote villages find themselves cut off from basic healthcare services, including immunisation programs, those who have fled to urban shantytowns are subject to poverty, disease and rampant violence. Many people throughout the country are ... suffering from mental disorders including acute trauma caused by witnessing or being victims of violent events, but areas affected by violence are often isolated and rarely benefit from visits by healthcare workers.
ATF, which ... has jurisdiction for investigating major fire incidents and arson in the United States, developed the arson program in Colombia. Prior to 2004, there were no arson investigators in Colombia; since then, two ATF- led basic arson courses have trained 36 arson investigators throughout the country.
The International Republican Institute (IRI) has been working in Colombia to strengthen political parties and democratic processes since January 2006. IRI’s current program rests on three principal components: fostering issue-based and representative political parties; strengthening Congress’ ability to represent people’s needs and problem-solve more effectively; and building the capacities of key constituent groups to influence politics and governance, with a particular emphasis on Afro-Colombians.
