On May 1, 2003, the Colleges and Universities sector was selected to become one of eight new sector partners in the Sector Strategies Program. This partnership is an exciting opportunity for U.S. EPA and colleges and universities to work together to achieve sector-wide environmental gains through innovative actions. The Sector Strategies national liaison works with six College and University national organizations to develop sector-specific approaches to assist colleges and universities in advancing the use of environmental management systems, reducing regulatory performance barriers, and measuring environmental progress.

Colleges vary in terms of size, degree, and length of stay. Two-year colleges offer the Associates degree (A.A.) and four-year colleges offer the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or Bachelor of Sciences (B.S.) degree. These are usually primarily undergraduate institutions, although some might have limited programs at the graduate level.

The term "college" ... applies to distinct entities within a university (usually referred to as "federated colleges" or "affiliated colleges"), akin to the residential colleges in the United Kingdom. These colleges act independently, but in affiliation or federation with the university that actually grants the degrees. For example, Trinity College was once an independent institution, but later became federated with the University of Toronto, and is now one of its residential colleges. In the case of Memorial University of Newfoundland, located in St. John's, the Corner Brook campus is called Sir Wilfred Grenfell College. Occasionally, "college" refers to a subject specific faculty within a university that, while distinct, are neither federated nor affiliated—College of Education, College of Medicine, College of Dentistry, among others.

What sets Roosevelt apart from other colleges in Chicago is that it offers programs and services that place the needs of its students uppermost in its priorities. Class schedules are flexible. Courses are offered from early morning until late at night as well as on weekends, and class sizes are small. The Roosevelt faculty, numbering more than 500 full-time and part-time members, is accessible to students. Like other well known colleges in Chicago, an impressive number of the faculty publish books and articles, conduct important research, and perform in the world's great concert halls. But first and foremost, Roosevelt professors are dedicated teachers who enjoy teaching and excel at it.
