Today's announcement builds on Sallie Mae's long-standing commitment to higher education in Texas, as it serves roughly 260 colleges and universities in the state. Sallie Mae's loan servicing center in Killeen, Texas, opened 17 years ago and employs more than 800 residents. Sallie Mae employees in Texas assist student and parent borrowers with federal and private education loan options, as well as general counseling on planning and paying for college.
The U.S. Department of Education estimates almost 18 million students will enroll in American colleges and universities this year. And a new national survey commissioned by electronics retailer Circuit City Stores, Inc. shows college bound students start shopping for tech gear two months or more before classes begin.
The new grants are intended to assist colleges and universities with their efforts to reduce the health and social consequences of substance abuse. Those receiving the grants are expected to screen and refer students in need to appropriate treatment, utilizing either university or community-based providers.
College Affordability in Jeopardy, released today by the National Center, highlights the nation's public two- and four-year colleges and universities, which enroll about 80% of America's college students. This report is the first to look at what has happened state-by-state to public tuition and fees, state appropriations for higher education, state student financial aid, and personal income for fiscal years 2002 and 2003 (as of December, 2002).

"A key attribute in running a business is name brand recognition and that's what competing in the NCAA basketball tournament does," said Ms. Peloquin-Dodd. "Being in the tournament is really free publicity for these institutions that are seeking to draw new students."
