Established in 1968 as the Northstar State University Foundation, the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Foundation was created to address the increasing need for private support. Today, the Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that serves as an integral partner with institutional foundations to advocate for the system and to raise and distribute funds for the benefit of students, faculty, staff, programs and communities.

The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system comprises 32 state universities and community and technical colleges serving the higher education needs of Minnesota. The system serves about 240,000 students per year in credit-based courses and 130,000 students in non-credit courses.

Gifts to the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Foundation come from the Foundation's board of directors, Minnesota State Colleges and Universities' trustees and staff, individual donors, civic and corporate leaders and area foundations. These gifts help students, faculty, and staff.

In 2005, the system's colleges and universities graduated 3,800 nurses, an increase from 2,186 graduates in 2001. During that time, nearly 14,000 nursing students were graduated from the Minnesota State colleges and universities.
