Thanks to Cingular Wireless, college basketball fans this year have an unprecedented voice in deciding who wins the Naismith Trophy. For the first time ever, fan voting, through the power and ease of wireless text messaging will account for 25% of the total. To participate, fans can text message "VOTE" to "26222" to submit their vote (voting is open to most wireless carriers). Voting for the Naismith Trophy concludes on Saturday, April 2 at 9:00 PM EST. The Naismith Trophy College Players of the Year will be announced in St. Louis on Sunday, April 3.

Still, other schools in populated areas manage to have big-time college basketball programs despite a plethora of other options. Colorado has never been able to capture any of that college basketball magic, and that’s really too bad. We’re missing out.

Memphis was arguably the biggest basketball victim of the cycle of conference realignment that took place from 2003 through 2005. The Tigers had previously been one of several perennially strong programs in Conference USA, which at the time was unanimously considered a major basketball conference. However, when the dust settled from the wave of realignment, all of the Conference USA basketball powers except for Memphis had moved on to other conferences, most of them to the Big East.
