Colitis: Treatments
built 646 days ago
Infliximab (or REMICADE) - a drug originally produced to treat Rheumatoid Arthritis - has recently been approved for the treatment of Colitis where traditional treatments have failed. REMICADE is a biologic therapy that recognizes, attaches to, and blocks the action of a protein in your body called tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha). TNF-alpha is made by certain blood cells in your body. It is administered through a series of infusions.

In cats with chronic colitis, dietary modification using hypoallergenic diets may be tried. Using a home-prepared or commercial diet that contains a "novel" protein source (one which the cat has not previously encountered) sometimes is sufficient to control the colitis and eliminates the need for further medical treatment. No food items except for the "hypoallergenic" diet should be fed to affected cats during this trial period of treatment. Cats that respond to this approach are thought to have a food allergy that is manifested as colitis.

REMICADE is approved to treat such indications as rheumatoid arthritis, early rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, Crohn's disease, ankylosing spondylitis, plaque psoriasis and ulcerative colitis. Golimumab is currently in Phase 3 trials for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis and is being investigated for administration by either monthly subcutaneous injection or every 12-week intravenous (IV) infusion. The companies anticipate filing applications with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the European Medicines Agency in 2008 seeking approval for golimumab in these therapeutic areas.

Anti-parasitic (deworming products, anti-protozoal drugs) treatment is indicated in cats with colitis to eliminate the possibility of parasites that are intermittently shed in the stool (Giardia). Parasites are a leading causes of colitis in cats, and this approach is routinely taken be done as a first step in the management of colitis.
