Colitis: Symptoms
built 659 days ago
The exact causes of chronic colitis are not always known. Scientists think that the body's immune system may react inappropriately to a virus or bacteria, causing the lining of the intestine to become and to remain inflamed. Chronic colitis is ongoing and long-lasting. In many cases it cannot be cured, although treatments are available that may help relieve a person's symptoms.
The most common disease that mimics the symptoms of ulcerative colitis is Crohn's disease, as both are inflammatory bowel diseases that can affect the colon with similar symptoms. It is important to differentiate these diseases, since the course of the diseases and treatments may be different. In some cases... it may not be possible to tell the difference, in which case the disease is classified as indeterminate colitis.
Collagenous colitis is inflammation of the colon, the last portion of the digestive tract that ends at the rectum and anus. The most common symptom is chronic watery, non-bloody diarrhoea. Collagenous colitis is sometimes called microscopic colitis.
Ulcerative colitis affects the colon, while Crohn's disease occurs in both the small intestine and colon. Symptoms range from mild to severe and include persistent diarrhea, abdominal pain or cramps, rectal bleeding, fever and weight loss. Children with the disease may experience delayed growth.

An Australian Government Initiative Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammation of the large bowel. Symptoms include bloody diarrhea and abdominal pain. The disease can ... have manifestations outside the bowel with involvement of the joints, skin, eyes and liver.
Irritable bowel disorder (IB) can ... cause bouts of colitis. Since IB is both difficult to diagnose and to treat, anyone who has had frequent recurrences of the symptoms above is prone to colitis and should contact a doctor if he or she suspects colitis. Especially if bacteria or parasites causes the colitis, this can only worsen IB and needs immediate treatment.
