Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory disease of the colon, the large intestine, which is characterized by inflammation and ulceration of the innermost lining of the colon. Ulcerative colitis affects only the colon.

Theories about what causes ulcerative colitis abound, but none have been proven. The most popular theory is that the body's immune system reacts to a virus or a bacterium by causing ongoing inflammation in the intestinal wall.

Ischemic colitis: This disease often affects the elderly. The mechanism of ischemia—massive decrease in the blood supply to the bowel—is not known, but shunting of blood away from the intestinal lining may be an important contributing factor.

Microscopic colitis takes two forms: collagenous colitis and lymphocytic colitis. Collagenous colitis and lymphocytic colitis are two types of bowel inflammation that affect the colon (large intestine). They are not related to Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, which are more severe forms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
