Colitis: Cases
built 659 days ago
The prognosis for cats with colitis depends on the underlying disease and the severity of the colitis itself. Many cases respond very well to appropriate therapy, although the signs can be recurrent in some cats.

For very extreme cases of collagenous colitis and lymphocytic colitis, bypass of the colon or surgery to remove all or part of the colon has been done in a few patients. This is rarely recommended.
Collagenous colitis was first described in 1976 [2]; since that time, multiple cases have been reported [1,3-9]. It is characterized by a thickened subepithelial collagenous band in the colonic mucosa that varies in thickness from 7 to as much as 100 µm (normal 1 to 7 µm more prominent in the rectum) (show histology 1A-1B) [5,9,10]. In comparison, lymphocytic colitis is characterized by a subepithelial lymphocytic infiltrate rather excess collagen in the colonic mucosa (show histology 2) [1,8,11,12].
While antibiotics are used to treat bacterial colitis, they can ... be indicated as a cause of colitis in some cases. Additional causes of colitis may include taking birth control medication, having autoimmune disorders, or smoking.
