Colitis: Cases
built 645 days ago
The incidence of ulcerative colitis in North America is 10-12 cases per 100,000, with a peak incidence of ulcerative colitis occurring between the ages of 15 and 25. There is thought to be a bimodal distribution in age of onset, with a second peak in incidence occurring in the 6th decade of life. The disease affects females more than males.[10]
For extreme cases of collagenous colitis and lymphocytic colitis that have not responded to medication, surgery to remove all or part of the colon may be necessary. However, surgery is rarely recommended. Collagenous colitis and lymphocytic colitis do not increase a person’s risk of getting colon cancer.
Remember, few cases of colitis can be cured. The goal of therapy for chronic colitis, therefore, is to enable your pet to maintain as normal a lifestyle as possible. Diet and drugs can generally suppress the inflammation in your pet's colon and help prevent recurrences.

People with collagenous colitis are most often diagnosed in their 50s, although some cases have been reported in adults younger than 45 years and in children aged 5 to 12. It is diagnosed more frequently in women than men.
Lymphocytic colitis (together with collagenous colitis) is a subtype of microscopic colitis. Therapy for lymphocytic colitis is based on case series and uncontrolled trials, or by extrapolation of data for treating collagenous colitis.
In some cases, the inflammation is accompanied by ulceration of parts of the membraneous tissue in the colon as well (known as 'ulcerative colitis'). In this instance, there is often blood found in the stools.
