Since that first onset, Coleman, who heads up MAGNUM, a Washington, D.C.-based migraine awareness group, has struggled with migraines his entire life, getting them at least twice a week. He says his migraines feel like "a gang of thugs" are smashing him in the head with baseball bats — over and over again. Before coming to State Parks, Ms. Coleman worked as Policy Director for Assemblywoman Helen Thomson for one year, responsible for legislative issues relating to water, agriculture and land use. Prior to that she was Legislative Director for State Senator Mike Thompson, coordinating his legislative agenda and providing staff leadership on major environmental legislation such as a park bond, salmon and steelhead restoration; and the protection of the Headwaters Forest.

From 1984-1996, Coleman sold the propane heating units under the name "Focus" heaters, and marketed them primarily to campers. In 1996, Coleman upgraded the BTU output capability of some of the heaters, named "PowerMates," and marketed them as industrial heaters - though attorneys for the victims allege that Coleman was well aware that their product users still included hunters and campers. "Because of the higher BTU output, the death rate associated with PowerMate is even higher than the death rate from the older, Focus heaters," stated Seattle attorney Michael Blue.
