Cold sores are typically spread by direct skin-to-skin contact with the virus. Kissing or rubbing against the infected area are common examples of how the virus particles can be transferred. See below for more information.

Choose a high-factor sunblock (such as those intended for skiers), and apply it to the area where your cold sores occur. Dont just dab on the exact spot cover the surrounding skin ... because cold sores dont always recur in exactly the same spot. If you tend to get sores on the actual lip, use a lip balm that contains UV protection.

Some products numb your skin and ... may prevent the development of cold sores. These topical anaesthetics will stop any soreness if a cold sore does break through. No prescription is needed: ask the pharmacist to check the list if he/she says otherwise.

Chaparral Native Americans used the herb chaparral (Larrea tridentata) as a remedy for colds and viruses, arthritis, burns, sores and other problems. Recently a company has patented a product called Larreastat derived from chaparral that has proven very effective in deactivating certain viruses, relieving inflammation and clearing up certain skin conditions. The product comes in capsules and a spray, which provides almost instant relief from cold sore pain.

When you have a cold sore you should not kiss anyone or allow anyone to come into skin contact with the sore. In particular, avoid kissing newborn babies and anyone who has a poor immune system such as people on chemotherapy or with AIDS. However, when you have no symptoms (when the virus is dormant), you are not usually infectious. Also, healthy people who already have cold sores cannot be re-infected.
