Cold Sores: Persons

Certain strains of the herpes virus cause cold sores. Herpes simplex virus type 1 usually causes cold sores. Herpes simplex virus type 2 is usually responsible for genital herpes. However, either type of the virus can cause sores in the facial area or on the genitals. You get cold sores from another person who has an active lesion. Shared eating utensils, razors and towels may spread this infection.

The main way of passing on cold sores is by kissing, but they can be passed on if the affected area rubs against another person's skin in other areas. This means that someone with oral sores can pass on the virus to a partner through oral sex. If this happens, the partner may develop genital herpes - which is the same condition as cold sores, but on a different part of the body.

These blisters have become known as cold sores or fever blisters since they can develop when a person has a cold or fever. But outbreaks frequently follow sun exposure, trauma, examination stress, emotional discomfort, the start of menstruation or intestinal upset--occasionally, they have no obvious cause at all.

The blisters of HSV-1 contain the virus that causes cold sores. Without proper hygiene, this virus can be very contagious. This is why it is important if you have cold sores to wash your hands often, especially after you may have touched your face. Do not share cups or utensils with another person.

A cold sore is caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus. Most adults have been exposed to the virus, with initial infection usually occurring in childhood, probably after being kissed by a person with the infection. Cold sores are triggered in only about 20% of adults, by many every day factors such as ultraviolet light or cold and flu.

A blood test cannot show whether a person can infect another person with the cold sore or herpes virus. A blood test... can show if a person has been infected at any time with the cold sore virus, or herpes simplex. There are also newer blood tests that can tell whether a person has been infected with Herpes simplex 1 or herpes simplex 2.
