Cold sores are caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus 1 (HSV-1), which can remain dormant in the body for long periods of time. The initial HSV infection manifests as a flu-like illness and generally occurs in early childhood, although some people may contract a primary infection as an adult. The virus is spread through contact with the fluid from the cold sore blisters or with the saliva of an infected individual. The virus is most easily transmitted when the blisters have first formed but the lesions remain contagious until they have healed completely.

Cold sores, ... known as fever blisters, are skin blemishes that usually appear around the mouth. They are a result of the Herpes Simplex Viruses (HSV1 and HSV2). There is a direct link between these two types viruses in which a person can contract cold sores by coming in contact with either virus. Once the virus has entered the body, it cannot be removed. Between 50 - 80% of all people possess this virus. It's spread through direct contact with saliva or cold sores.

In some people, the virus reactivates and produces recurrent cold sores that are usually in the same area but are not serious. Herpes virus type 2 causes (GENITAL HERPES).

Cold sores are often uncomfortable and can cause some pain. They usually seem more noticeable to the individual with a cold sore, than to those around them, and they can make some people feel very self-conscious. Some people are lucky and only get them once - while others find they come back several times a year. Fortunately, action can be taken to take control of the situation and reduce healing time.

Cold sores are very contagious, and even more so when cold sore blisters are present. The virus is commonly spread by kissing... sharing plates, glasses, bottles etc with someone who has a blister present is not recommended due to the contagious nature of the virus. It is estimated that a majority of people who are infected actually picked up the virus before turning ten years old.
