Cold Sores: Lips

Cold sores are caused by herpes simplex virus. There are two types, called type 1 and type 2. Either type can be caught on any part of the body: lips and genitals are the most common places. This leaflet is about facial sores.

An outbreak is very irritating, and can also lead to intense itching. A cold sore or fever blister usually lasts several days. Once the blister bursts or ruptures, this signifies the end of the outbreak

Cold Sores are caused by Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 (HSV1), which is distinguished from Herpes Simplex Type 2, which causes genital herpes. However, it is possible for either virus to cause cold sores; for example, lip-to-genital contact may result in an HSV-2-caused cold sore. Likewise, HSV-1 may cause genital herpes via this mode of transmission.

Cold sores usually appear on your lips. Occasionally, they occur on your nostrils, chin or fingers. And, although it's unusual, they may occur inside your mouth — but only on your gums or hard palate, which is the roof of your mouth. If the sore appears on other soft tissues inside your mouth, it may be a canker sore, but it's not a cold sore.

Cold sores, sometimes called fever blisters, are clusters of small blisters on the lip and outer edge of the mouth. The skin around the blisters is often red and inflamed. The blisters can break open, weep a clear fluid, and then scab over after a few days. Complete healing may take 7 to 10 days.
