Coal (Fossil Fuel)
built 646 days ago
Coal is India's major source of fuel for power generation. The gap between the demand and supply of power is increasing in India. There may be need to add 100,000 MW of power generation during this decade to maintain the economic growth of the nation. Since coal is the cheaper fuel available indigenously it is going to play a major role in the power generation in the coming decade. The quality of Indian coal is not good. Moreover low grade coals are being utilized for the power generation.

Coal Coal is a fossil fuel formed in swamp ecosystems where plant remains were saved by water and mud from oxidization and biodegradation. Coal is a readily combustible black or brownish-black rock. It is a sedimentary rock, but the harder forms, such as anthracite coal, can be regarded as metamorphic rocks because of later exposure to elevated temperature and pressure. It is composed primarily of carbon along with assorted other elements, including sulfur. It is the largest single source of fuel for the generation of electricity world-wide, as well as the largest world-wide source of carbon dioxide emissions, slightly ahead of petroleum and about double that of natural gas.[1] Coal is extracted from the ground by coal mining, either underground mining or open pit mining (surface mining).
Coal Creek Station is ... participating in several projects to test novel methods to further reduce emissions. One is drying coal. Also, since 1998, Great River Energy is committed to directly participate in more than $20 million worth of mercury research projects at Coal Creek Station and Stanton Station to characterize, measure and reduce mercury emissions.
Coal-to-liquid (CTL) technology converts coal to a liquid fuel distributable through the existing petro-infrastructure for use in conventional engines. Since CLT would increase the value of the mineral deposits and preserve the market share against other energy sources, coal companies (and allies in the UMWA and other members of its Coal-to-Liquids Coalition) are aggressively lobbying Congress for subsidies.

Coal is primarily used as a solid fuel to produce electricity and heat through combustion. World coal consumption is about 6.2 billion tons annually, of which about 75% is used for the production of electricity.
The 45thConference on Coal, held on 11 - 14 September in Kananaskis was a resounding success. With industry, government and academia well represented and speakers and delegates from from around the world, the atmosphere was alive with news and information on the changing face of the international coal industry.
