The CNN News Group will open an international bureau in Lagos, Nigeria, it was announced today by Eason Jordan, chief news executive and president of newsgathering, CNN News Group. The establishment of a CNN newsgathering operation in Lagos complements CNN's existing Johannesburg, Nairobi and Cairo bureaus and, for the first time, provides CNN with a strategic presence in West Africa. The addition of Lagos brings CNN's international bureaus to 29, with a total of 42 worldwide.

In the wake of last months purge at CBS News over the broadcast of a report critical of Bushs National Guard service in the early 1970s, CNN, owned by the giant Time Warner conglomerate, had no stomach for a fight. Equally notable is the role of the two Democratic legislators, who provided validation for the anti-Jordan campaign from the liberal side of the political spectrum, seeking to outdo the right wing in their defense of the honor of American soldiers in Iraq.

Jordan, a 23-year veteran of CNN who oversaw much of the channel's breaking-news coverage since the late 1980s, has been an advocate for journalists' safety, particularly during the Iraq war. But it was his comments during a session last month during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, that led him into trouble. The story was initially reported on a Florida businessman's blog and picked up by blogs before it exploded onto the mainstream media this week.

"In the leadership realignment", according to McGuirk, "Jordan adds responsibility for an expanded newsgathering department, including CNN Newsource and CNN's Features Units, to his oversight of CNN's global newsgathering operation." Jordan will be based in Atlanta and report to Johnson on "editorial matters" and to Kent on "operating issues."
