Inspired upon waking, Joe gave Insane Clown Posse its name, and a new and purposeful direction. Band members totally latched onto this, quickly developing their wicked clown alter egos. They began painting their faces like clowns, in a trademark style that would remain unchanged until 2002, with the release of the sixth and final Joker's Card album. Insane Clown Posse then immediately started work on their first full-length album and Joker's Card, Carnival of Carnage.

During the 16th century the Commedia dell'arte ... became a huge influence on perceptions of the clown in Europe, and influence which passed through pantomime, into vaudeville and on to the touring circuses of the 19th and 20th centuries. The Commedia took influences from the grotesque masked clowns of carnivals and mysteries, and began in market places as a way to sell vegetables. It became incredibly popular throughout Europe amongst both the general public and the courts. The stock characters of the commedia originally included the Zanni - peasant clowns, Pantalone, the old Miser, Il Dottore - The Banal Doctor, and then grew from there to incorporate the Lovers, Arlecchino, Pedrolino, and Brighella, who have survived into the twentieth century in one form or another.

They exaggerate usual facial features like beards, hair, eyebrows, whiskers, lips, noses or heads in order to poke fun at themselves and the human condition. The Hobo or tramp impersonation was created by Otto Grielberg and was introduced in the United States. Dark make-up is used suggesting the need of a shave and tattered or patched multicolor clothing is worn giving the impression of being down on your luck. Character clowns may impersonate a cowboy, fireman, tramp or a policeman. Emmet Kelly and Charlie Chaplin are two famous character clowns.
The comic character that is usually associated with the word "clown" -- often interchangeable with the nickname "Joey" -- was originated by Joseph Grimaldi in the early 1800's. Joey's comic gift was the flexibility and expressiveness of his face and body. His winces, glances, grins, and scowls projected his emotions to the farthest reaches of the theatre. Grimaldi used makeup to exaggerate his rubbery features. His makeup designs, applied over a base of pure white, supplied the basic funny face on which clowns still compose their greasepaint variations today.
