1. Human Cloning -- Reproductive Cloning
   “It is a recipe (for human cloning) in the sense that ’catch a turtle’ is the recipe for turtle soup,” said Kennedy at a news conference. “There is much difficulty that would remain for anybody who tried to use this technology as a first step toward reproductive cloning.”

   No one is sure how far human cloning has actually gone. By April 2003 Clonaid, a company created by the Raelian sect, said they had already created five human baby clones. The first, Eve, was allegedly born in America.
3. Human Cloning -- Clones
   In 1997 Clonaid, a company that billed itself as ‘the first human cloning company’ was founded by the Raelian movement, a sect that believes humans were created by extra-terrestrial beings who had mastered genetic engineering. Clonaid announced the birth of "first human clone" on December 26th 2002. The clone, whom they called Eve, was born after being created by Clonaid using a technique similar to that used to create Dolly the sheep. Clonaid announced a second birth to a Dutch lesbian woman early in January 2003 and a third to a Japanese couple plus two others in late January. All five babies were said to be healthy but there was no independent verification of Clonaid’s claims. Initially promising immediate genetic testing on Eve and others by independent scientists, Clonaid then claimed that lawsuits launched against them made testing impossible because the courts would try to identify the children and take them into care.
4. Human Cloning
   In marked contrast, Senate bill S. 245, "The Human Cloning Prohibition Act of 2003," provides for a comprehensive ban on human cloning for any reason. It is identical to the bill already passed in the House.
5. Clonaid -- Cloning
   Clonaid, which declines to reveal where its facilities are, was founded in the Bahamas in 1997 by the man who founded the Raelian religious sect. The man, Rael, says he learned about the origin of life on Earth from a visitor from outer space. He says he views cloning as a step toward reaching eternal life.

   The founder was quoted as saying that now everyone knows who Clonaid and their weird religion is...this seems to be a giant hoax put out there for publicity. Why is the media still giving these weirdos the time of day?

   The Human Cloning Foundation hailed recent news that British scientists had successfully cloned a human embryo in the United Kingdom for the first time. Their aim is to get stem cells for treating degenerative diseases and paralysis.
9. Human Cloning -- Scientists
   This week, Chicago scientist Richard Seed announced that he will proceed with human cloning. Politicians, including President Clinton, are outraged. But doctors and researchers of human infertility are concerned that the debate may stifle their own research and techniques, which fall far short of human cloning. Stephen Smith of Minnesota Public Radio reports.
10. Human Cloning -- Process
    In the cloning process the basic relationships of the human person are perverted: filiation, consanguinity, kinship, parenthood. A woman can be the twin sister of her mother, lack a biologicalfather and be the daughter of her grandmother. In vitro fertilization has already led to the confusion of parentage but cloning will mean the radical rupture of these bonds.
