Clindamycin: Bacteria
built 613 days ago
Clindamycin is an antibiotic that is available in a variety of forms. It is used to treat conditions that are caused by infection with certain types of bacteria. The topical solution is used to treat acne. It may take up to 8 weeks for improvement to be seen. It is very important that this medication be used on a regular schedule as prescribed by the doctor. If you miss a dose of this medication, use it as soon as you remember it. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and carry on with your regular schedule.
Clindamycin may potentiate the opsonization and phagocytosis of bacteria even at subinhibitory concentrations [1,2]. By disrupting bacterial protein synthesis, clindamycin causes changes in the cell wall surface which decreases adherence of bacteria to host cells and increases intracellular killing of organisms. The drug ... exerts an extended postantibiotic effect against some strains of bacteria which may be attributed to persistence of the drug at the ribosomal binding site.
Clindamycin is used in cases of suspected toxic shock syndrome,[14] often in combination with a bactericidal agent such as vancomycin. The rationale for this approach is a presumed synergy between the bactericidal antibiotic, which causes the death of the bacteria by breakdown of the cell membrane, and clindamycin, which is a powerful inhibitor of toxin synthesis. Both in vitro and in vivo studies have shown that clindamycin reduces the production of exotoxins by staphylococci;[15] it may ... induce changes in the surface structure of bacteria that make them more sensitive to immune system attack (opsonization and phagocytosis).[16][17]
