Based on the true story of Frank and Lillian Gibreth's child rearing adventures as they were depicted in the book written by two of their children, CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN is directed with a refreshing post-war optimism by Walter Lang. Though the huge family must be run with a workmanlike, though comic, efficiency, it is Dad's charm and love for his offspring keeps the family together.

Stealing the show is Clifton Webb as Frank Bunker Gilbreth. He dominates the whole movie and manages to push Myrna Loy as Mrs. Lillian Gilbreth into the background scenery. Though Gilbreth is shown being both an authoritarian and a playful father, he's ... shown as being rather arrogant and a know-it-all. It's hard to fall completely in love with the fellow.

In 1950's film Cheaper by the Dozen, Webb and Myrna Loy played Frank and Lillian Gilbreth, real-life efficiency experts of the 1910s and 1920s, and the parents of 12 children. The film's success led to a sequel, Belles on Their Toes, without Webb.
