The Cleveland Indians are a Major League Baseball team based in Cleveland , Ohio . In recent times, the club belongs to the Central Division of the American League. The Cleveland Indians are one of the Charter franchises of the American League, now playing in the American League Central Division against such rivals as the Minnesota Twins, Chicago White Sox, and Kansas City Royals. Indians were quite disappointed, when they missed playoff in 2005. So during this season, the only satisfactory finish will be in the playoffs. The Indians, who concluded 2005 season with a 93-69 record, have intensions to show something different this year with a solid lineup, rotation and bullpen. Though the opening day lineup was similar to the one that ended the last season home game but there are new inclusions to the roster too.

One of the American League’s original teams, the Cleveland Indians have had a history of intermittent success and long periods of ineptitude. The team won their first World Series in 1920, then didn't make the Fall Classic again for 28 years. The 1948 season is the most fondly remembered by Indians fans, as the team won the American League's first ever tiebreaking playoff game (against the Boston Red Sox) and took the World Series in six games from the Boston Braves. They won the pennant again in 1954 with a then-AL-record 111 wins, but were swept in the World Series by the New York Giants.

As an American League charter franchise, the Cleveland Indians have a rich heritage overshadowed by a drought that began prior to the first expansion. First called the Blues, then the Bronchos, Cleveland became the Naps when Nap Lajoie was acquired in 1902. Pitching was an early and consistant club focal point. Addie Jones posted Hall of Fame credentials, including a perfect game during the heated 1908 pennant race. His career was tragically shortened by tuberculosis.

From 1969 to 1993 the Cleveland Indians finished no higher than 4th place. The strike season of 1994 finally ended that curse when manager Mike Hargrove had the ammunition to win. The Cleveland Indians ended up winning every AL Central title from 1995 to 1999. They advanced to the World Series in 1995 and 1997 but came up short both times. Thus the Tribe still await their first championship since 1948. Only the Red Sox and White Sox suffer a longer drought among original AL franchises.

Home of the Cleveland Indians for 61 years, fans of the team were ready to move out of the "Mistake by the Lake" in 1993. The idea for a new stadium in Cleveland was first mentioned in 1903. By the 1920s a 25,000 seat stadium was proposed. However, Osborn Engineering designed a much bigger stadium that could house many activities. In 1928, a $2.5 million bond was issued by the city to build the stadium. It became the first stadium built using public money.
