Derricks won a 1982 Tony Award for his performance in the Broadway musical Dreamgirls. He began appearing on television in 1979. He has made guest appearances on several series including The Equalizer, Moonlighting, Touched by an Angel, Charmed, and The Wedding Bells. In 2006, he appeared in the TV movie, Basilisk: The Serpent King.
