Clear Channel Communications of San Antonio may not be a household name yet, but in less than six years it has rocketed to a place alongside NBC and Gannett as one of the largest media companies in the United States. The mega-company has gained a reputation for its ugly hardball tactics. Clear Channel has played a leading role in destroying media diversity in the United States. And yes, it is the same media company that allegedly "blacklisted" certain songs following September 11, including Cat Stevens' Peace Train and John Lennon's Imagine.

Clear Channel Communications purchased its first FM station in San Antonio in 1972. The company purchased the second "clear channel" AM station WOAI in 1975. In 1986, the company purchased its first stations outside of San Antonio. In 1992, the U.S. Congress relaxed radio ownership rules slightly, allowing the company to acquire more than 2 stations per market. By 1995, Clear Channel owned 43 radio stations and 16 television stations. In 1996, the Telecommunications Act of 1996 became law.

The Clear Channel Communications was set up way back in the year 1975. The company was set up San Antonio Broadcasting Company, which acquired WOAI-AM. This was the Company’s first “Clear Channel” radio station. It was meant to broadcast through its own frequency, through out the nation. Later in the year 1984, the initial public offering rose up to $0.43 per share. The Broad Street Communications Corporation increased the Company’s radio assets to six FM and six AM radio stations across seven radio markets.

According to The Hill, in late 2004 Clear Channel hired Brownstein Hyatt & Farber PC to lobby on "competition in the broadcast industry, media ownership and Federal Communications Commission oversight." Lobbyists working on the account included Thomas Hudson, "who served two years as chief of staff to Sen. John Breaux (D-La.)."[10]
