Last June the FCC announced rule changes that would further relax restrictions on media ownership, allowing broadcast megaliths like Clear Channel and Infinity to become even bigger. In response, a nationwide coalition of media diversity activists launched a grassroots campaign to raise public awareness about the dangers of media monopolies.

Data released by the Center for Responsive Politics in early 2004 revealed that Clear Channel executives donated $42,200 to Bush compared to $1,750 to Democrat Presidential candidate John Kerry. Clear Channel's political action committee contributed 77% of their $334,501 in federal contributions to Republicans. [9]

On February 5th Clear Channel told the union that it was canceling the negotiations scheduled for February 13th and 14th. The union requested evidence that Clear Channel did not have majority support from the bargaining unit and has not received a response from Clear Channel to date. The union is now saying the Clear Channel violated Section 8 (a) (1) and (5) of the Act by "failing and refusing to continue negotiations, and by unilaterally withdrawing recognition from the Union as the lawful collective bargaining representative of the unit."

The opportunism displayed today with the letter to Clear Channel is the single biggest act of intellectual dishonesty out of the Congress in quite some time. It is the forty-one senate Democrats who should be repudiated; and it is they who should apologize to Rush Limbaugh and to American service members.
