Clear Channel & Payola: The Federal Communications Commission has fined the nation's largest radio conglomerate $ 8,000 for violating payola laws.... "This is a weak slap on the wrist from a feeble commission that is no match for Clear Channel or any of the other big radio conglomerates that are powerful players in Washington," said Jeff Cohen, founder of Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting, a New York-based media watchdog group. "The FCC is obviously ill-equipped to deal with this new form of payola. It's no longer about some deejay in the control room stuffing a few bucks into his back pocket. These days payola is being done right out in the open by huge conglomerates. And nobody in Washington seems to care."

Today, broadcast, cable and newspaper giants like Viacom, Comcast and Gannett want a chance to expand their empires and enjoy the same large-scale efficiencies that Clear Channel has profited from. But they're frustrated. After years of intensive lobbying and with a Federal Communications Commission chairman, Michael Powell, who is widely considered to be thoroughly pro-deregulation, the havoc wrought upon radio by Clear Channel is unexpectedly offering ample proof of what can go wrong with media deregulation. Radio's current mess is having a significant impact on the debate over media concentration, and may even force Powell to water down his long-awaited ownership recommendations.

Clear Channel officially denies most of these allegations. An article titled Know the Facts on its corporate website addresses many of these concerns. It ... mentions a radio company once owned by Viacom. In its previous corporate structure, Viacom had purchased the broadcast interests of Westinghouse, another major defense contractor. However, Viacom has split up, and today the company, called CBS Radio, is part of CBS Corporation.

Clear Channel's commitment to the National MS Society and raising awareness for MS spans many years and includes millions of dollars donated in advertising time and talent. Building on that record of generosity, during this past year the company committed over $1 million to an innovative MS awareness campaign called "The Face of MS," which the Society launched in conjunction with MS Awareness Week last March. Clear Channel worked collaboratively with the Society to develop creative materials for the campaign that included outdoor, radio and TV elements.
