Clay minerals are typically formed over long periods of time by the gradual chemical weathering of rocks (usually silicate-bearing) by low concentrations of carbonic acid and other diluted solvents. These solvents (usually acidic) migrate through the weathering rock after leaching through upper weathered layers. In addition to the weathering process, some clay minerals are formed by hydrothermal activity. Clay deposits may be formed in place as residual deposits, but thick deposits usually are formed as the result of a secondary sedimentary deposition process after they have been eroded and transported from their original location of formation. Clay deposits are typically associated with very low energy depositional environments such as large lake and marine deposits.

Clay is a major industrial mineral resource in Arkansas. Combined industry output in 1995 amounted to over 1 million tons of raw clay, valued at over $1.2 million. In 1995, Arkansas ranked 4th in the nation in production of both kaolin and fire clays, and 9th in common clays. Few data concerning tonnage and grade of individual clay deposits in Arkansas are available, but the amount of potentially useful clay in Arkansas is substantial. Changes have ocurred in the various clay industries in recent years. Some changes are due to technological advances, changing economic conditions, opening new markets, shifts in demand, and increases in both domestic and export markets. Changing conditions which affect the clay industry in Arkansas include increasing freight rates, energy costs, production and marketing costs, and governmental control (mining laws).

Clay consists of a sheet of interconnected silicates combined with a second sheetlike grouping of metallic atoms, oxygen, and hydroxyl, forming a two-layer mineral such as kaolinite. Sometimes the latter sheetlike structure is found sandwiched between two silica sheets, forming a three-layer mineral such as vermiculite. In the lithification process, compacted clay layers can be transformed into shale. Under the intense heat and pressure that may develop in the layers, the shale can be metamorphosed into slate.

Clays used for pottery and stoneware are principally kaolin and/or ball clay. To be successfully worked and dried, the clay must be plastic when wet, shrink little while drying, and resist warping and breaking after being dried before firing. At this stage, it is known as "greenware". After firing, the final product must be hard, strong, nonporous and of suitable color. Household items manufactured using pottery clays include porcelain sinks and waterclosets (toilets), some chinaware, various types of ovenproof cookware, stoneware and other kitchen and dinnerware, ceramic floor and wall tile, and decorative items. Pottery has been manufactured from red-orange residual clays in the Ozark Plateaus region of Arkansas.

Clay, a Raleigh, NC native, intended to pursue a career in special education and was in the process of completing his degree at UNC-Charlotte when he met Diane Bubel and her then 13-year-old son, Mike. Clay cared for Mike, who had been diagnosed with autism, for over a year. During this time, Clay grew close to the Bubel family and came to appreciate their relationship with Mike: "Working with a number of families over the span of five years, I have never seen a family make raising a child with a mental disability look so easy as the Bubel family did. Guns 'N Hoses is an amateur boxing show featuring law enforcement officers versus firefighters from the Missouri counties of Cass, Clay, Jackson and Platt; and the Kansas counties of Johnson, Wyandotte and Miami. All bouts will be supervised by USA Boxing, which is the national governing body of amateur boxing in the United States. Seventy-five percent of the proceeds raised from the event will go to S.A.F.E. (The Surviving Spouse and Family Endowment Fund), which exists to serve the families of law enforcement officers, firefighters and emergency service personnel in the Kansas City metropolitan area who have perished in the line of duty. The remaining twenty-five percent of the proceeds will go to support local amateur boxing programs to help prevent juvenile delinquency in local communities.
