Claudia Cardinale: Pink Panther
built 618 days ago
In 1963 Cardinale won a Nastro d'Argento (Silver Ribbon) for her role as Maria in La Ragazza di Bube (Bebo's Girl). After this success she was cast in the Hollywood production of Blake Edwards The Pink Panther where she played Princess Dala. Cardinale made several other Hollywood movies including Circus World (1963), Blindfold (1965), The Professionals (1966) and The Hell with Heroes (1968), but always considered herself more of an European movie star. Claudia Cardinale's role in The Professionals is probably considered the best of her Hollywood movies, starring alongside Burt Lancaster, Lee Marvin, Jack Palance, Woody Strode and Robert Ryan.

Cardinale made her American film debut in Blake Edwards's very popular The Pink Panther, securing her international star status. Other American films, such as The Professionals, followed. During the 1970s and 1980s... Cardinale made most of her films in Italy and Europe. Many were not distributed in America or suffered from limited distribution, thereby reducing Cardinale's international exposure. Three 1980's roles, in Liliana Cavani's La pelle (well-received at Cannes), in Werner Herzog's Fitzcarraldo, and Diane Kurys's A Man in Love, have again focused attention on her as she enters a more mature phase of her life and career.

In 1963 Claudia played the princess in "The Pink Panther" which was filmed in Italy. The film was an enormous success and brought her to English speaking audiences. (She had earlier, in 1959, a tiny part in the British comedy "Upstairs And Downstairs", playing an au-pair girl who causes chaos by her enthusiasm for sailors.)

Cardinale never made a real attempt to break into the American market since she was not interested in leaving Europe for extended periods of time. Her Hollywood films include Circus World (1964), The Pink Panther (1964) Blindfold (1965) and The Hell With Heroes (1968).
